Q&A: SBG Technology Solutions President and CEO Bruce Dickey Discusses How SBG Advances Digital Transformation for Government

In 2021, DSS acquired SBG Technology Solutions (SBG) to expand its service capabilities for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Department of Defense (DoD), and other federal agencies. Since this time, SBG has expanded its capabilities and offerings in the federal arena, with a key focus on enhancing digital transformation efforts for government.

As a key driver for this growth and expansion, Bruce Dickey, president and CEO of SBG, provides the vision and leadership that is propelling SBG’s growth trajectory.

In the following Q&A, Bruce discusses SBG’s capabilities, key government customer successes, as well as how the company is driving IT modernization for government.

The following has been edited for length and clarity.

Q: Please give us a high-level overview of SBG Technology Solutions

Dickey: SBG Technology Solutions has been providing innovative technology and professional services to the federal government and private sectors for more than 15 years. Our capabilities cover a wide range of services, including strategizing business and user needs, modernizing and aligning those needs with best-in-class IT solutions, cybersecurity, data management, systems engineering, and business intelligence.

We prioritize IT governance, current trends, and operational security within government systems. This includes both cloud-hosted environments within agencies and commercial cloud services like Amazon Web Services and Oracle GovCloud.

Our primary focus is on national security services and health IT within the government. Within the DoD, we oversee and support our government customers in a variety of areas, including satellite-based communication systems and naval weapons systems training. For the Health IT sector we focus heavily on IT modernization, including DevSecOps, cybersecurity, and COTS integration. Notably, we manage the enterprise mobility management program for the VA, overseeing the provisioning, credentialing, and security of all VA mobile devices, including cell phones and iPads.

Additionally, we support our nation's Veterans through multiple prime contracts with our King Street Technology Partners (KSTP) Joint Venture at the VA. Our work includes claims processing support services, and enterprise program management.

We also support the electronic health record management program within the VA and provide IT governance and portfolio management support, primarily within the VA's Office of Information Technology. Our cybersecurity efforts are robust, focusing on the risk management framework process to support agencies and departments in achieving their authority to operate. This work spans the DoD and the VA.

Furthermore, we partner with the intelligence community on several contracts, supporting their mission needs through systems engineering, cybersecurity, mission availability, and information management.

Q: Please tell us how SBG is focused on overall digital transformation for the federal government.

Dickey: Game changing technologies are advancing at a rapid pace and there is confusion about how to best implement additional capabilities in support of our customer’s missions. Technologies like AI, cloud computing, and data analytics are prevalent, but our customers often struggle with how to best implement and translate these technologies into tangible benefits within the current funding environment while.

They also face challenges integrating these technologies into already complex IT environments, which often include a mix of new, legacy, and end-of-life technologies with different levels of maturity, cybersecurity protocols, and interoperability.

At SBG, we address this complexity and work as a team to act as an honest broker between those capabilities and our customer’s needs. We are here to advise and evaluate those solutions as to when and how even a small piece of new technology can have a high impact on their mission.

We help create realistic roadmaps and rollouts of technology. One example I mentioned previously is our Enterprise Mobility Management Program at the VA, where we work with our customers on new technologies, such as bring-your-own-device and advanced credentialing capabilities. Having supported this VA program for many years, SBG is deeply in-tune with their mission needs and priorities.

It is essential to focus on the customer's mission and build strong relationships with them to understand their goals. At SBG, we emphasize our associates’ continuous learning and encourage open collaboration, training, certifications, and upskilling our people to provide expertise to our customers.

Q: Can you share with us any new key contract wins and successes to date?

Dickey: Through our KSTP Joint Venture, we recently won the recompete for our existing program management support contract at a federal agency, and we're proud to continue this effort. This contract involves providing business intelligence, portfolio management, and real-time dashboard analytical support for our government customer. This enables our customer to make informed decisions on resource allocation, program and portfolio milestones, and provides up-to-date information for senior leaders for congressional reporting, testimony, and other decision-making processes.

Earlier this year, we also secured a new contract supporting the Navy in the construction and oversight for aircraft carriers. This is new work for SBG, and we are excited about the positive mission impact we aim to achieve in the nation's aircraft carrier construction programs.

Q: Overall, when it comes to future-focused IT trends in government, how is SBG poised to help advance the mission for its customers?

Dickey: SBG is poised to be a dedicated mission partner to the VA and defense agencies, as well as other federal civilian and intelligence sectors. We achieve this through our talented workforce, the effective processes we've implemented across our contracts and company, and by integrating the latest technology into our efforts and programs. Our approach is capability based, focusing on return on investment, speed to market, and capability enhancement.

We see cybersecurity, Zero Trust, and data protection and exploitation as critical trends that will continue to grow.

Systems engineering will remain a core area for us, as SBG started as a systems engineering and architecture development focused company and has since expanded. Following Systems Engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering processes – developing and delivering capabilities that consider the entire enterprise – from requirements and capabilities to cybersecurity, integrated logistics and test and evaluation needs – while integrating new technology to support these requirements really shows the value SBG can provide to our nation and Veterans.
